The reasons behind the choice to become a mother are many, and more or less conscious:
- the desire to reproduce, or rather to self-reproduce, present in both men and women, which mirrors the process through which every living cell tries to escape death. Procreating means continuing to live even after one's own death, keeping a part of oneself alive through a child, in order to fulfill the desire for immortality deeply rooted in every living being;
- the desire for completeness and maturity, both on a physical and a social level;
- the desire to recapture the time of one's own childhood, in order to relive its positive aspects and overcome or correct its negative ones.
It can be useful to remember, however, that procreation isn't the only way to fulfill these desires. There are countless other ways to fulfill them, requiring a different kind of commitment which, depending on individual characteristics, may suit one's own expectations better, and be less demanding and difficult to manage than a child.
